What to expect in your first lathe session
A walk-through of induction, guarding, and the first facing cut so new Foundation learners know the rhythm of the bay.
Your first lathe session at Spruceway starts away from the chuck. Tutors check your safety passport, footwear, and hair or jewellery restrictions before the machine is powered.
You will identify the emergency stop, guard positions, and the direction of spindle rotation with the tutor watching. Only then do you mount a short aluminium blank that the school supplies for induction cuts.
The first operation is usually facing. Speeds stay conservative. The point is clean contact with the tool, not a dramatic chip. You measure the face with a rule, then with a micrometer, and record both so you see how feel and instrument disagree.
Turning to a diameter comes next, still under close supervision. We pause if chatter appears and talk about tool height and overhang before anyone increases feed.
By the end of the session you should have a short bar with a faced end and a turned diameter logged in your skills book. That record follows you through the Foundation Workshop Programme and into later assessments.
