Student projects fail more often from the wrong stock than from a shaky tool path. Mild steel forgives a blunt tool but fights when your fixture is soft. Aluminium cuts cleanly yet shows every mark from a rushed finish pass.

On Materials Lab Days we cut coupons from the same grades stocked in our tool crib. Learners feel the difference between free-cutting mild steel and a tougher structural grade under the same feed rate.

Brass remains popular for decorative fittings and small threaded parts. It machines beautifully, yet the cost climbs quickly if your brief only needs a steel proof of concept. We ask learners to state whether the metal is for assessment, display, or a working assembly before they order.

Heat treatment talk stays grounded. We do not run a full hardening shop for hobby projects, but we do explain why a soft shaft will mushroom under a press fit and when to ask for a different alloy instead of trying to force a finish.
